 The Toll

On an average day, nearly four Montanans die prematurely from smoking related diseases. 

The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids estimates that more Montanans die each year from smoking than from car accidents, alcohol,drugs, AIDS, suicide, and murders combined. 

 

 

Tobacco Use in Montana

  •  Results from the 2008 Montana Adult Survey:  Approximately 118,000 Montana adults (16% are current smokers.
  • 1,500 Montanans die each year from tobacco use.

 

Other non-health costs from tobacco use include:

  • residential and commercial property losses from smoking-caused fires 
  • extra cleaning and maintenance costs made necessary by tobacco smoke and litter
  • productivity losses from smoking-caused work absences, smoking breaks
  •  on-the-job performance declines
  • early termination of employment caused by smoking-caused disability or illness

 

Matters of Life and Death

  • 35 years Age at which smokers begin to have a higher death rate than nonsmokers
  • One-half Proportion of all smokers who will eventually die from smoking
  • 28 minutes Amount of life expectancy lost for each pack of cigarettes smoked
  • 25 years Years of life expectancy a typical pack-a-day smoker loses
