Tobacco Free Medical Campus

A tobacco free campus creates a safe and healthy environment for everyone.  It encourages tobacco users to quit, eliminates all exposure to secondhand smoke, and sends a clear message that tobacco use doesn’t support good health.

It's a Trend

A growing number of hospitals, outpatient
medical facilities, and mental health programs
across the country and in Montana have
created a tobacco free campus policy.

Currently, sixteen hospitals and one health department in Montana have a tobacco free policy
in place.

About a dozen more hospitals and several
outpatient facilities are in the planning process for
a 2009 launch date.

Assistance Available

The Montana Tobacco Free Medical Campus
Project can assist your facility throughout the
planning and implementation process. The
Project Coordinator can provide:

  • On-site assistance such as meeting with your policy planning team or conducting a training about tobacco cessation or tobacco free policies.
  • A policy toolkit specifically written for your type of medical facility.
  • Free signage for your campus.
  • Ongoing assistance by phone and email during the transition process.

 Many Benefits

A tobacco free campus policy prohibits smoking  and the use of tobacco products everywhere on

the property.

With thoughtful planning and communication, hospitals and medical facilities can experience a
smooth policy transition and experience many positive outcomes:

  • Patients and employees have more incentive to
quit tobacco and their efforts are more successful.
  • Tobacco-free patients recover quicker and have
    fewer complications.
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke is completely
    eliminated on the property.
  • A safe and healthy environment for everyone
    who comes to your facility.
  • Employees are healthier with fewer absences.
  • Increased work productivity when employees
are no longer taking multiple breaks to smoke.
  • More attractive grounds when people are not
congregating to smoke and tobacco litter is
    eliminated.
  • Your policies are aligned with your mission.
  • Increased support for other initiatives that
decrease tobacco use and protect health
    .
